A lightweight and simple way to obtain such system is DOSBox, which emulates a DOS inside a window, as if you were running a computer of that age.

I restored my computer, updated to Windows 10 and I can't run Warcraft 2 on DosBox. I could do that before restoring my pc.

Basic question to anyone who has already purchased this: is this release running via Dosbox? Or have they packaged it in a specific way that it requires Windows to run?
They were originally released for DOS, so I'd assume that's the easiest way to get it running but if they've repackaged it for Windows specifically I may pass (I bought the Diablo rerelease and have struggled to get it running under Linux).

The second game is the Battle.net version which was made for Windows, but the first one is indeed packed with Dosbox.

Warcraft 1: Dosbox. I haven't tried it yet, but you should be able to extract the files and run on DosBox in Linux.
Warcraft 2: Battle.Net edition, native Windows

Thanks for the info, guys. I already have the Warcraft II Battle.Net on disc but was keen to try Warcraft 1, so I guess I'll just wait for a sale, then.

Well, if you do buy it but run Linux, I know innoextract can pull the files from GOG installers. Done it with many other games in the past. So it *should* be possible to extract everything, pop it into DosBox, and start playing.

Warcraft 1 is a DOS only game;it was never released in a Windows version. Ihave not seen the GOG version yet, but I presume they simply put a DOSBOX weapper on it.
For Warcraft 2, GOG went with the Battlenet version, which is native Windows, though I suspect almost of all it was ported frm the DOS versions by Blizzard.

Just realised you can buy Warcraft 1 separately, so I think I'll pick it up then. Anyway, thanks again for the info and the head's up on innoextract.
