  • Pros

Integrated EV-DO. Fingerprint reader. Quiet keyboard. Dual-core processor. Good feature set.

  • Cons

    Mediocre management suite.

  • Bottom Line

The HP Compaq nc6320 is tailored to mobile professionals, thanks to integrated EV-DO, a lightweight chassis, and plenty of connectivity options. Although it is a bit bulky, it has a great feature set and is significantly cheaper than the Lenovo ThinkPad T60, its primary competitor.

hp is going toe-to-toe with lenovo in the business laptop market, positioning the hp compaq nc6320 as a competitor to the thinkpad t60. i think the t60 is still the superior system overall, but the nc6320 is a very enticing, lower-cost alternative, with just about everything a mobile professional could want. although its 15-inch screen adds size and weight, it is still portable at 6.1 pounds (slightly lighter than the t60). and it is joining the pack of business notebooks that offer an integrated card for verizon ev-do high-speed cellular data network. the nc6320 goes a step further by including the powerful intel core duo processor and a fingerprint reader.

like the other notebooks in the nc line, the nc6320 has a very corporate-looking graphite-gray exterior. it's covered in magnesium alloy, like its predecessors, and thermally maintained to stay cool even though its dual-core processor produces lots of heat. the palm rests are laminated to prevent scratches and the mouse buttons are rubberized for noise-free operation, ensuring that you don't disturb others on the train into work or in a quiet office. typing on the keyboard did not generate much noise, either, and i couldn't be happier with the typing experience.

the 15-inch screen is handy because you can fit more of a document or web page on the screen, reducing vertical scrolling. but i still prefer a 14-inch screen for commuting both short and long distances. the screen has a matte finish to prevent glare from fluorescent lighting. the system's built-in speakers aren't the best i've heard in this class of notebook, but they sound decent.

I finally managed to recovery the BIOS with a help of USB flash disk. I will introduce the procedure to crisis recovery my HP Compaq laptop. You need to prepare a USB flash disk and another computer that is connected to the Internet (we need to download the BIOS image from HP). The steps to recovery.

the nc6320 actually has a better feature set than the thinkpad t60. it has four usb ports, one more than the thinkpad. it has a 6-in-1 memory card reader; the t60 has none. the nc6320 even has a serial port, an s-video-out port, and a parallel port (for legacy printers). like the t60, the nc6320 has a fingerprint reader, which is tied to a trusted platform module (tpm). both work in tandem, and both are hardware components outside microsoft windows that do a better job of securing and protecting your vital information. i commend hp for finally creating its own backup and restore software. it's a lot better than the previous altiris backup solution. but the nc6320's management utilities still fall behind the thinkpad t60's excellent compilation, and for a business notebook, that could be a deal breaker. the t60 is better at keeping downtime to a minimum.

the nc6320 is loaded with the 2.0-ghz intel core duo t2500, but the dual-core t60 edged it out slightly on our sysmark performance tests. compared with a single-core system, like the nc6140, the nc6320 showed a 61 percent performance gain on our internet content creation tests and a 39 percent boost on office productivity. the nc6320 uses integrated graphics, which might be a deal-breaker for some professionals, considering that the t60 loads discrete graphics. the nc6320's battery life was impressive, at 4 hours 49 minutes, and it's on par with the thinkpad t60 and the 5 hours and 16 minutes it was able to generate.

like the nc6140, the nc6320 has a slight bulge at the top of the screen, which conceals the verizon ev-do antenna. hp does a better job of hiding the antenna than sony and lenovo do with the sony vaio vgn-tx670p and the thinkpad t60, which both have antennas sticking up off their cases. although i don't mind an exposed antenna like the t60's, i don't want a swiveling antenna that can break off. you might think that a concealed antenna may not be as effective, but in testing, i got throughput scores that were consistent in multiple locations throughout new york city. for example, in queens i was able to download files at 590 kbps. in manhattan, download speeds were a consistent 625 kbps throughout the day. these scores are slightly lower than the t60's, but the difference is not enough to notice when web surfing or e-mailing. and ev-do is still consistently faster than cingular's edge network and just as fast as hsdpa. (the problem currently facing hsdpa is the lack of coverage in areas like new york.)

the nc6320 uses verizon's access manager, a utility that manages user profiles and your ev-do connection. i found it to be very user-friendly, but lenovo's access connections is still by far the best wireless client out on the market. access connections manages all your wireless connections, including wi-fi, bluetooth, ev-do, and wired lan, and you can switch profiles with ease, which you can't do on the nc6320.

the hp compaq nc6320 has an excellent feature set, and at $1,799 direct, it comes in at $1,000 less than the thinkpad t60. the nc6320 delivers excellent performance, and having integrated 3g wireless really sweetens the deal. but the t60 is still my top choice for a business notebook, with its unsurpassed (and well integrated) management suite and superior craftsmanship, but then again, it comes at a premium price. if your budget doesn't make the thinkpad a realistic possibility for you, the nc6320 is definitely worth considering.
